Success for trainees at Foundations Furniture

local people complete course

12 local people have successfully completed 'Job Readiness' programmes with the Foundations Furniture charity, in Teams, Gateshead.

Participants spend up to 12 weeks each with Foundations on the new Foundation4Work programme to gain work experience in warehousing and retail, while receiving a wide range of training and support to effectively search and apply for jobs and prepare for interviews.

The programme was piloted in 2019 and was part funded by Gateshead's Community-Led Local Development programme, 'Gateshead Goes Local' as part of the 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme in England.

Due to its success, Foundations has received a further £21,750 in match funding to continue its Foundation4Work programme throughout 2020.

After being a full time carer, Simon Arkle joined the programme after coming back to live in the North East to give him a greater chance of quickly finding work in his home town. Alongside work experience with the charity, Simon boosted his CV with the in-house training he received in Equality & Diversity, Risk Assessment, Health & Safety in the Workplace, Manual Handling and Mental Health Awareness. In addition, he received support from Foundations' skilled advisors to update his CV so that it became a true representation of the many skills he has to offer to employers.

After just 10 sessions with Foundations combining work experience, training and job readiness support, Simon is now working full time.

"If it wasn't for the F4W programme I would have been looking for jobs without being active, this would have affected my mental health. This programme has helped me search for work reliably as well as staying active within the community. All of the Foundation4Work staff were very helpful and friendly, they made me feel part of the team from the start. I would just like to say thank you to Foundations for helping me keep my confidence and give me valuable experience as you helped me get back into the workplace."

Anybody of working age who is unemployed and lives within the catchment area can take part in the Foundation4Work programme. Visit the website for more information.
